Note : The corrected returns for all of the electoral districts in Kings County do not indicate whether or not special votes had been cast, or the numbers that were cast. Since the special votes for both Queens and Prince have been stated (and included as such in this database's vote totals), it is assumed that the Kings County results are similarly inclusive.

Electoral system : After many years of debate on the matter, the Legislative Council, the upper house of the Island government, was abolished, and amalgamated with the House of Assembly to form the Legislative Assembly. In the 1893 general election, the voting districts remained unchanged, as did the number of representatives elected (two); however, voters were now to elect one Assemblyman, and one Councilor per district. That said, something of the old system was still present. Assemblymen were to be elected by popular franchise (males of voting age), whereas Councilors were to be elected by property franchise (males of voting age who met the minimum property qualifications). See Minding the House p.206.

Additional information for Liberal-Conservative

Citation : The Liberal-Conservatives were a political party that came to prominence in March of 1878. The party's origins can be traced back to the general election of 1876. While the Island’s political scene had been the mainstay of Liberals and Conservatives, these two traditional parties gave way to coalitions. The issue of public vs. sectarian schools, and the provincial government’s stance on the matter, reigned supreme, and polarized politicians and the Island into two groups based largely on religion: The Free School Coalition (Protestant Liberals, and some Conservative Liberals), and the Denominationalist Coalition (remaining Conservatives, and some Liberal Catholics). The “Free Schoolers” advocated for adherence to the Free Education Act (passed in 1855), and supported public/secular schools. The sitting Free School Coalition (Liberals) resigned in March of 1878, placing the Opposition party - which had morphed from the Denominationalists into the Liberal-Conservatives - in power, at which point a general election was called.

Note : The race for Councillor and Assemblyman in 3rd Kings was a close contest on both counts in the 1893 general election; however, the competition between Cyrus Shaw (Liberal-Conservative) and Malcolm McDonald (Liberal) for Assemblyman was especially contentious. When the corrected returns were handed down, Shaw managed to squeak by with a slim majority of 4. McDonald demanded a scrutiny on the grounds that John Moore and James A. Wilson had voted outside of their polling division; for his part, Shaw took umbrage with the fact that Sobie Johnson and Neil McSwain supposedly did the same.

Final count : The Patriot of January 4, 1894 contains an update on the contest between Cyrus Shaw and Malcolm McDonald in 3rd Kings. Although McDonald had demanded a scrutiny on the grounds that invalid votes had been polled in favour of Shaw (2), and then brought forward evidence of three additional invalid votes, the sheriff ruled that only the first two objections could be considered, as they had been raised on or before Declaration Day. As a result, Shaw managed a victory by a two-vote majority. Of additional interest is the mysterious disappearance of Nathaniel D. Campbell’s vote, polled in favour of McDonald, which gave Shaw a four-vote majority on Declaration Day.
