Number of Electoral Districts
Invalid votes : No votes are recorded in uncontested districts in which a winner was acclaimed.
Franchise : Regulation of the franchise at federal elections fell to the provinces from 1867 until 1885. The franchise varied widely from province to province and even within provinces, depending upon property ownership, location of residence, race, gender and age.
Franchise rules were centralized and the electoral lists became the responsibility of the federal government with the passage of the Federal Electoral Franchise Act by the Conservatives under Prime Minister John A. MacDonald in 1885.
The Liberals under Prime Minister Wilfred returned the power to draw up electoral lists to the provinces, although limited somewhat the matters on which variation was possible.
A more coordinated, but still limited approach to the franchise followed in 1917, introduced by the Conservative government of Prime Minister Robert Borden. Gender and property limitations were removed by 1920 for the 1921 federal election, leaving age and citizenship as the only restrictions.
